County Executive Steven Neuhaus made a special trip to the Minisink Valley Middle School on Nov. 27 to present seventh grader Jaden Smernaos with a certificate of recognition and November's citizen of the month award. Jaden wore pink for the occasion.

“It gives people hope for the future to see young generations going above and beyond to help their community,” County Executive Neuhaus said. “Jaden is an example of that.”

Throughout the month of October, Jaden wore pink to school, every day, to raise awareness of breast cancer, while fundraising for American Cancer Society’s (ACS) “Real Men Wear Pink” campaign. He raised over $7,000.

With the help his family, Jaden created his own campaign page, hosted a pizza-eating challenge, organized a bake sale, sold campaign t-shirts, and mobilized his school community to hold a “Pink Out” day in honor of breast cancer victims and survivors.

"We are very proud of Jaden’s extraordinary efforts and accomplishments,” Principal Larsen said. “He was able to raise awareness and a large sum of money for a purpose larger than himself—and foster a sense of community, all at the same time."

Well done, Jaden!
