"TEACH & I WILL LEAD"

JROTC is a national high school young adult program whose mission is to: "MOTIVATE YOUNG PEOPLE TO BE BETTER CITIZENS". The foundations are: CHARACTER BUILDING, CITIZENSHIP & LEADERSHIP. This comprehensive and intensive program is localized for Minisink Valley HS JROTC cadets. The Course of Study is an extraordinary dual curricular and extra-curricular program for all grades of high school. It is managed, organized, and led by the senior teenage cadets in the program, with assistance of their instructors Col. Bernstein and SFC Cheeseboro.

This young adult co-ed program emphasizes discipline, civic values, and ethics. It teaches cadets to be responsible, accountable for their actions, to be respectful and courteous, and to achieve a high standard of leadership. Throughout each year cadets learn many skills, such as financial responsibility, social and communication skills, educational skills, World of Work skills, inter-relational skills and leadership technique. As they move up in the program, they are assigned to leadership positions in the battalion, executive command or support staff, putting their skills to use leading and managing the battalion.

Though it is a military funded and led program, JROTC does not incur a military obligation or commitment of any sort. Cadets are not required to serve in the military for any reason due to participating in JROTC. We also do not teach military tactics or any other sort of controversial skills. We are a citizenship program first and foremost. However, should a cadet choose to pursue a military career, or any career, JROTC develops an excellent foundation of discipline, honor, integrity, and respect.

We have several after-school groups in which the cadets are involved. Our Drill Team focuses on precise drill movements, and often competes against other schools. Color Guard carries the flags and can be seen at many school and community functions. The Military Police serve as parking guards and security at Minisink sports games. The Raiders are the physical side of the corps, going out camping and doing a lot of physical fitness training. LEAD Team is a group of cadets that competes in academic competitions with other schools. J-JAG is the legal military judicial system within Congressional Law with cadets representing various components of the Court and presenting cases for experience and evaluation. Honor Guard are cadets performing saber drill and greets visitors with unique courtesy and protocol. JROTC also participates in many community service events throughout the year, ranging from small cadet-run events to large scale projects involving the entire battalion.

JROTC – Who Are We:

The JROTC program is comprised of high school students from all grade levels, from freshmen to seniors. They are separated into Leadership Education Training (LET) levels, I though IV. First year cadets (LET I) are just learning the basics of the program: Drill and ceremonies, citizenship, etiquette, and general JROTC knowledge. Second and third year cadets (LET II and III) move on into  leadership positions, but continue to learn more advanced leadership techniques and decision making skills. Fourth year cadets (LET IV), all seniors, make up the core leadership and staff of the battalion. They are no longer being taught in the classroom; rather, they put their hard-earned skills to use in training the younger cadets, as commanders of the various extra-curricular groups, and taking care of the essential logistics and paperwork of the battalion with the assistance of the Army instructors.
