ORANGE COUNTY YOUTH SURVEY

Minisink Valley CSD will be working with Orange County Health and Mental Health Departments, the New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse and The Center for Research, Regional Education, and Orange County Outreach (CRREO) at SUNY New Paltz to conduct a county-wide survey of middle and high school students in grades 8, 10, and 12.  The purpose of the Orange County Youth Survey (OCYS) is to improve our community’s understanding of students’ strengths and the risks they may face for developing health problems like smoking, underage drinking and other drug use.  The information provided can help us all, schools and parents, take steps to reduce and prevent these problems.

If your child participates, he/she will be asked to complete a survey (with no names or identification numbers) that will be confidentially administered by a classroom teacher or other school staff member.  The survey is completely voluntary and privacy will be strictly protected.  Students will be given the survey in a computer lab utilizing a web-based (on-line) questionnaire that should last between 20-25 minutes. If there are any questions your child does not wish to answer, he/she is free to skip questions and may stop taking the survey at any time he/she chooses.  Students who do not wish to participate in the survey, stop participating, or whose parents choose to deny permission for their participation will be provided with an appropriate alternative activity while the surveys are being administered.
