MR. HOFFMAN’S 7TH GRADE LIFE SCIENCE CLASS LEARNS LIFE-SAVING TECHNIQUE

Mr. Hoffman’s 7th grade life science class recently welcomed middle school nurse Mrs. Singer for a CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) demonstration and a lesson on the performance of the Heimlich maneuver. This activity complemented the circulation and respiration component of a lesson unit on the body and body systems.

Following Mrs. Singer’s instruction, the students had an opportunity to practice the Heimlich maneuver, a three-step emergency response to choking that employs abdominal thrusts to help clear the airways from food or other obstruction.

Mrs. Singer drove home the importance of this technique by sharing that a student’s life at a neighboring school district was once saved by a peer who had learned to perform it. Students found the lesson compelling and very useful.
