Minisink Valley’s Middle School boasts 31 poets – at least! As many as 31 students participated in the annual Halloween Poetry Contest, organized by school librarian, Maggie Spicehandler. The contest gives students an opportunity to have fun with creative writing and enter a friendly competition around Halloween themes.

While there are trophies involved, to this year’s winners, the best prize does not go on a shelf.

Shea Berlinski, grade 8, won “Scariest” category with “The wind.” "It was a great experience because it allowed me to express my creativity," Shea said.

"My favorite thing about the contest was being creative with art and having something to participate in," said 6th grader Jackie Courtenay, winner of “Best Artistic Design” with a piece titled “Fright Night.”

"I really enjoyed the poetry contest because it allowed me to express my imagination on paper," said Antonella who swept the “Most Spooktacular” category with a poem titled “The Halloween Mystery.”

Winners were unveiled during morning announcements on Halloween, and grand-prize winner Antonella shared her poem with the school, over the intercom. They gathered in the library immediately after to receive their trophies—and a little something sweet.

Congratulations to the 2016 Halloween Poetry Contest Winners!
