Acid and Base Lab

Two groups of chemical compounds that are important are acids and bases. Acids are substances that release hydrogen ions in solution, and bases release hydroxyl ions.  Acidity and basicity are measured on a scale of numbers which run from one to fourteen. The neutral point is seven. Numbers below seven indicate acidity, and numbers above seven indicate basic conditions.

Indicators are substances that change color to indicate acid-base conditions.  Many indicators will change color at a particular pH value.  Students in Mr. Michelitch's 8th grade science classes used indicators to determine potentential  hydrogen (pH).

Titration is a method for determining the strength of an acid. An acid-base indicator is added to an acid. A carefully measured amount of base is added froma buret to the acid until the indicator shows that solution has become neutral.

The students showed great maturity in handling the equipment and materials over the three days it took to complete this lab.  Well done!
