Captain Ostensen Teaches Lessons on Iraq

Captain Ostensen of the US Army National Guard was on a very special mission today to teach the sixth graders in Mrs. Ey’s social studies classes about his tour in Iraq. He served in Iraq as the Infantry Platoon Leader. He is also known as Mr. Ostensen, husband to Kristine Ostensen, one of our 6th grade teachers. The students had many questions for him about the people, their culture, the land, rivers, animals, technical advancements and architecture because they are studying about Ancient Mesopotamia. The students wanted to know what Iraq is like today. Captain Ostensen was prepared for the students’ questions with various pictures he had taken while in Iraq that portrayed the landscape and some of the animals he would come across. He also had an online link to a video of a sand storm to show just how quickly it turns dark and dangerous. A map of Iraq was brought up on the SmartBoard to show the two familiar rivers Tigris and Euphrates that once surrounded the Fertile Crescent. Thank you Captain Ostensen for your service to your country and for sharing some of your experiences from Iraq!
