FIRST GRADERS APPROACH CONTEMPORARY ART THROUGH THE FAMILIAR

Art teacher Kara Welsh’s used the relatable, harvest symbol of the pumpkin to introduce her first graders to the concept of installation art and the work of artist Yayoi Kusama.

Students explored some to the world’s most iconic art installations—created to inhabit and transform specific spaces—including Kusama’s “All the Eternal Love I Have for the Pumpkins,” currently on view at the Dallas Museum of Art.

Inspired by Kusama’s polka-dotted gourds, Otisville’s first graders sculpted and painted clay pumpkins, and used a variety of tools to style them with dots.
