'ESPERANZA RISING": BRINGING LITERATURE TO LIFE

Following the reading of “Esperanza Rising,” an award-winning work of historical fiction, fifth grade classes celebrated with book-themed activities on Friday, Dec. 15.

With perseverance and hope as the overarching themes, “Esperanza Rising” chronicles a child’s journey from a wealthy landowner’s daughter in Mexico, to a poor, migrant farm worker in California, during the Great Depression.

During Friday’s celebration, each class rotated through activity stations related to important parts of the book. Students learned about the Mexican flag, used the scientific method to made their very own avocado-based hand lotion, and used primary documents to write about causes and effects of the Dust Bowl. With devastating consequences to farm workers, this event looms large in “Esperanza Rising.”

Students identified related quotes containing figurative language and figures of speech such as similes, metaphors, and symbolism. They used these elements to create illustrations and make a class quilt.

The day culminated with a taste-test of the traditional Mexican foods that named in the titles of each book chapter.
