MVCSD MAKING SWITCH TO COMPUTER-BASED TESTING FOR ELA, MATH EXAMS

When our students sit down to take the New York State Education Department (NYSED) 3-8 ELA and math exams this spring, they won’t be holding a No. 2 pencil.

Minisink Valley schools will be among 600 others switching to computer-based testing for this spring’s state exams.

All school districts in New York state were given this option for 2018. The New York State Education Department (NYSED) established the goal to implement statewide computer-based testing starting in 2020.

This year, each grade level will sit for the ELA and math exams over a two-day administration, rather than three days, as in years past. The ELA exam will be administered April 10-17, while math will be offered May 1-8.

ELA Exams Schedule

  • Grade 3: April 10-11 (Tue. – Wed.)
  • Grade 4: April 12-13 (Thu. – Fri.)
  • Grade 5: April 16-17 (Mon. – Tue.)
  • Make ups: April 18-20 (Wed. – Thu. – Fri.)

Math Exams Schedule

  • Grade 3: May 1-2 (Tue. – Wed.)
  • Grade 4: May 3-4 (Thu. – Fri.)
  • Grade 5: May 7-8 (Mon. – Tue.)
  • Make ups: May 9-11 (Wed. – Thu. – Fri.)

State test results do not affect student grades, and test scores will not factor in teacher and principal evaluation scores. These assessments play an important role in making both state and local instructional decisions, and they serve as a benchmark in understanding each student’s academic progress. We encourage all of our students to participate in these assessments.

Parents and students can preview the online environment of computer-based testing. The New York State Question Sampler also offers accommodation features for students with disabilities, such as text-to-speech and reverse contrast.
