SIGN LANGUAGE LESSON IN MRS. MARCOLINA'S CLASS

On Wednesday, January 20, 2010, Mrs. Marcolina's 5th grade class welcomed Taylor's mom to their classroom.  Mrs. Filipowski presented an exciting lesson on communicating using sign language.  She had learned it while a student at California State University-Long Beach because her roommate/basketball teammate was deaf.  Her presentation was part of 5RM's study of Helen Keller, and those who face similar handicaps.  The students have been reading Helen Keller's biography, writing reports, creating time lines, memorizing and communicating through the American Sign Language alphabet, learning the signs for vocabulary words, story telling through signing, and viewing the film, The Miracle Worker. Mrs. Filipowski's lesson not only expanded everyone's understanding of the world of the deaf, but it provided students with a fun and educational afternoon.  This picture shows Mrs. Filipowski, Mrs Marcolina, and Taylor demonstrating their "name signs".
