“The fire trucks are coming!” The news went viral at the elementary school this morning, the old-fashioned way.

As part of the annual Fire Safety Week, firefighters representing the Johnson, Slate Hill and Unionville Fire Departments spent much of their day talking with our students and answering their questions.

In the school’s gym, students learned about calling for help, the safest way to leave the scene of a fire, and the importance of having a designated meeting place.  Following “Stop, Drop and Roll” exercises, students watched firefighters put on their full gear, including masks and respirators.

Outside, students enjoyed a close look at fire engines and learned about their life-saving equipment—before taking turns at climbing inside the engine cabin.

MVES recognizes the men and women who help keep our homes and families safe, and we thank our local fire departments for making time to educate our students about fire safety.
