Minisink wrestler Mia Macaluso made history for the sport on January 20 when she became the first Section 9 girl to win an individual wrestling title in an otherwise all-boys tournament. She placed first in her weight class at the Gene Brigham Invitational last Saturday, after pinning Walton-Delhi’s Nick Lamoreaux in 49 seconds.

“It’s a pretty cool feeling to win, in a boys tournament, as a girl,” said Mia, the first girl on the Warriors wrestling team, and a member of the Venom girls wrestling team. “It motivates me and other girl wrestlers to continue to grow the sport and hopefully build it into a girls high school team some day.”

Now in her third year on Minisink’s varsity team, Mia has also broken boundaries and taken to the mat in Japan and Sweden. A sophomore, she now has her eyes on the Division I championships in February, where she’s aiming for a Section 9 medal.

GO MIA! CONGRATULATIONS from your team and coaches, and our entire school community! Minisink’s Macaluso first Section 9 girl to earn wrestling title
