District still awaits DOH guidance on start of ‘higher risk’ sports on Feb. 1

Attention Minisink Valley athletic families:

As you know, on Jan. 22, Gov. Cuomo and the New York State Department of Health (DOH) approved the start of higher risk sports and recreational activities to begin on Feb. 1, but delegated the final decision for play to begin with local county health departments.

Guidance from Gov. Cuomo’s office states that high-risk sports may begin practice and play on Feb. 1 “only as permitted by the respective local health authorities (i.e., county health departments).”

As of this afternoon, Jan. 29, we are still awaiting further guidance from the Orange County Department of Health (DOH).

In the interest of transparency, we are sharing a Jan. 27 statement issued by the region’s county executives.

Statement from regional county executives: Hudson Valley Counties Authorize Higher-Risk Sports to Proceed, Effective Feb. 1

We remain optimistic we will receive further guidance soon.

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding.
