The Minisink Valley Key Club took the time to recently make homemade chicken vegetable soup for the Warming Station, a homeless shelter in Middletown.

Students gathered after school with adviser Jodi VanDervoort to cut the fresh vegetables, prepare the chicken and broth and adding just the right amount of seasoning to make a hardy soup for those less fortunate.

Accompanying the two large pots of soup were bread with butter and Valentine’s Day cookies.

“It was great working together as a club in the CAP room,” said Club President Elizabeth McKeon. “Everyone had a job and was contributing in some way. About 20 of our members were either washing dishes, cutting vegetables or adding spices to the soup. We were really just focused on getting the meal out for the people in our community who need it the most.”

The Key Club  is an international service program for high school students. It’s a student-led organization whose goal is to encourage leadership through serving others.
