The students’ challenge in Mr. Hoffman’s science class was to engineer and fabricate a protective container for a fragile product--a raw egg--utilizing a minimum amount of materials.


Inside its protective nest, the egg was to land intact from a series of free falls, beginning at 5 meters, and progress to higher heights each time it survived another fall--until one design remained. 


In researching and engineering their egg-shielding invention, students applied their knowledge of potential energy (stored energy) and kinetic energy (energy of motion), and they kept a diary outlining their progress and findings.


Students took the challenge to heart and enjoyed the competition. “I got to be creative and think like an engineer,” one student said. “It was fun building and testing our container. I had to solve problems, like a scientist,” another student added.
