The farewell to the Class of 2017 began on Monday, June 19, with the Baccalaureate Exercises in the school auditorium.

The JROTC Colorguard opened the ceremonies to the traditional “Pomp and Circumstance” and Class President Brianna Cabrera led in the Pledge of Allegiance. Directed by Victor Izzo III, the Chamber Choir performed John Lennon’s “Imagine,” and the Senior Ensemble brought it home with a selection from the “High School Musical.”

Baccalaureate addresses were presented by Joseph Flaherty, president of the Board of Education; Brian C. Monahan, superintendent of schools; Eileen Cook, math teacher; the Rev. Dr. Albert Potgieter, class parent—and senior Jack Golden.

Speaking to and on behalf of his class, Golden acknowledged every group of people who played a role in his education at Minisink: from administrators and teachers, to custodians and secretaries. He described the emotional moment he realized that, come fall, his family will no longer be close at hand to help him “fix every problem” he faces. But he also showed and urged optimism and excitement for the road ahead.

“Now, we are finally going to find out what it is to be individuals,” Golden said. “This is your chance to figure out what you are all about, what you think and what you believe.”

Congratulations, Class of 2017! Your families and your school community believe in you
