We are peace, we are the world, Otisville students sang during the school’s celebration of the International Day of Peace, on Fri., Sep. 22.

Ahead of the celebrations, students decorated paper pinwheels with color and words of peace, inspired by the Pinwheels for Peace project. During the outdoor assembly on the school’s front lawn, Mrs. Frawley’s fifth graders led in the peace pledge. Mrs. Bendlin’s class sang “We are Peace,” while BOCES students performed “We are the world.” Mrs. Bannon’s fourth graders created a peace banner, and Mrs. Mynders’s class wrote and shared a peace poem. The event culminated with students whirling their Pinwheels for Peace in the wind.

Otisville Elementary has joined this worldwide celebration for ten consecutive years. This year’s outdoors assembly was organized by Mrs. Hughes, music teacher, and Mrs. Welsh, art teacher.

The International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The United Nations General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples. The theme for 2017 is “Together for Peace: Respect, Safety and Dignity for All.”
