OTISVILLE'S WINTER OLYMPICS CONNECT SPORTS WITH ACADEMICS

Otisville Elementary doesn’t wait for an even-numbered year to host its own Winter Olympics, but they’re always more exciting when the whole world is in on it.

Olympics organizers, Mrs. Giufre and Mr. Uhrig, setup ten different sport stations around the school gym. After rotating through them all, students check off their favorite winter sport on a wall chart. Earlier this week, there was a tie between luge and snowboarding.

“I think it’s important that students learn about the Olympics and winter sports that may be unfamiliar to them,” said Mrs. Giufre. “We also encourage them to watch the Olympics at home with their families, and we do a medal count for the USA throughout the games."

But there is more to this annual sports event in Otisville. During morning announcements, there is fact-sharing about the ancient Olympics, and the meaning of symbols such as the flame, rings and medals. Back in their classrooms, teachers find opportunities to tie the school’s olympic celebration to current events and other curriculum content.

“The whole thing gives us an opportunity to talk about the world, other countries and cultures, and to make connections with other academic areas,” said Mrs. Giufre. “The students enjoy the opportunity to try some new things, and the relatable approach to instruction.”
