Minisink Valley Elementary School was abuzz during the month of March celebrating Music in Our Schools Month.  Activities for everyone’s enjoyment included…

Morning Musical Fun Facts

Each day, during morning announcements, students were treated to interesting facts about unique musical instruments from around the world. Music teacher Mr. Loretto emailed video links of these instruments in action to faculty so students could learn more about them.

Second Grade Lunch Bunch

All month long, 28 second graders spent two lunch periods a week in the music room with Mr. Loretto. They worked diligently to prepare two pieces to be performed during the culminating Music in Our Schools Month (MIOSM) assembly. The first piece, “Enter with Singing,” was part of the official concert for MIOSM, sponsored by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), and it was sung by children across the country. The second piece, an African song called “Take Time in Life,” would be accompanied by some very special drummers.

A Little Birdie Told Me MVES is Full of Musical People

Faculty and staff were handed paper birds on which they wrote interesting musical facts about themselves. The birds were perched on a tree outside the music room for everyone to see.  The messages were also projected on a screen during the MIOSC assembly for everyone to read.  This kind of activity allowed students to connect with their teachers through shared experiences and enjoyment of music.

Mr. Loretto & Preschool Story Hour: Families Make Music Together

On March 29, Mrs. Redd and her Preschool Story Hour families were invited to the music room to enjoy a music class. Students and families experimented with their voices and instruments, learned new songs, moved expressively to classical music, and made a song-themed craft.

Faculty/Staff Drum Ensemble

Music is for kids of all ages! Nearly 20 faculty and staff members gathered several mornings a week in the music room to drum together before school. They learned the accompaniment for “Take Time in Life,” which would be performed by the Second Grade Lunch Bunch at the upcoming MIOSM assembly. The drumming was such a hit that the faculty and staff have decided to continue meeting beyond MIOSM.

The All-School Assembly for Music in Our Schools Month

On April 8, following spring break, the entire school gathered in the auditorium to wrap up MIOSM festivities. The assembly opened with the Second Grade Lunch Bunch singing “Enter With Singing.” Mr. Loretto warmed up the audience with a beat-motion activity and some vocal exercises.

Throughout March, all students K-2 learned “I’ve Been to Harlem,” another selection from the official concert for MIOSM.  Now all their hard work was about to pay off.  “It was amazing to hear nearly 450 children sing joyfully in unison, and then in a three part round, Mr. Loretto said.

After the song, Mr. Loretto introduced the Faculty/Staff Drum Ensemble to the audience. Students were thrilled to hear their teachers and school staff perform together with the Second Grade Lunch Bunch. The assembly ended with a quiet listening and movement activity to refocus the children as they returned to their regular classrooms.
