It’s getting close! Plans progress for June 1 ‘Relay for Life’ event

relay for life artMinisink Valley High School will host a Relay for Life event on Saturday, June 1 from noon to 9 p.m. on the high school’s track.

Relay for Life is an American Cancer Society fundraiser with a mission to promote cancer awareness, celebrate survivors and caregivers and fund cancer research and treatments.

Relay for Life team members will honor those lost to cancer, support survivors, and participate in themed ceremonies and laps around the track.  Each team is asked to fundraise $100 for each member.

Everyone in the district is welcome to participate and can create a team by using this link:

Here’s some additional useful information about the event:

WHAT IS RELAY FOR LIFE?

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life movement is the world’s largest fundraising event to fight every cancer in every community. Each year, more than four million Relay For Life participants around the world rally communities to celebrate those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action to fight back.

WHAT HAPPENS AT A RELAY EVENT?

Relay For Life events are community gatherings where teams and individuals camp out at a school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Fundraising before and during the event helps fuel the fight, and entertainment and activities keep things fun and lively.

WHAT WILL MY TEAM BE DOING DURING THE EVENT?

Many activities will be occurring during the event. One person from each team will be walking the track at all times to represent how “cancer never rests.” There will be team activities such as: Tug of War, Water balloon races/tosses, potato sack races, Zumba, yoga, etc. Teams are encouraged to participate. We encourage at least one member from each team to participate in the event throughout the day. For example, the National Honor Society team will have members there throughout the day and time spans.

WHAT ITEMS SHOULD I BRING TO THE EVENT FOR MY TEAM?

Teams are encouraged to bring canopy tents, chairs, tables, and/or coolers for drinks and snacks to the event. It may be helpful to bring blankets or sheets for students to sit on if there are not enough chairs. There will be water provided.

CAN MY TEAM BRING A GRILL FOR OUR TEAM?

No. Nothing flammable is permitted.

CAN MY TEAM BRING YARD GAMES?

Yes, the Relay for Life team will also have some games at the event, but you are able to bring games as well.

WHAT SHOULD I DO WHEN I ARRIVE TO THE EVENT?

When arriving, please report directly to the “check in” tent and sign in. Team Captains should arrive by 12 p.m., sign in, and begin setting up their team’s area on the field.

CAN I SHOW UP TO THE EVENT AS AN INDIVIDUAL? DO I HAVE TO BE A PART OF A TEAM?

Yes, absolutely. Individuals are welcome to show up to the event and register at the “Check In” tent on the day of the event. The Relay for Life team is asking for a suggested donation if you register as an individual.

WHAT IS THE ATTIRE FOR THE EVENT?

Please dress comfortably. The weather varies because this is an outdoor event. A majority of the event involves activity, so please wear comfortable footwear.

CAN MY TEAM DONATE TO THIS EVENT?

Absolutely! The Relay for Life MV Team would love donations of water, snacks, extra games, pop up tents, etc. Please email  RelayforlifeofMW@gmail.com if your team is willing to donate.
