The Minisink Valley JROTC placed approximately 3,500 flags and the grave markers of the veterans interned at the Orange County Veteran’s Cemetery on Nov. 7, in preparation for Veterans Day.
Their efforts are part of the many community service projects the group does each year and is also JROTC’s primary annual Service Learning Project. Service-learning is an educational approach that combines learning objectives with community service in order to provide a pragmatic, progressive learning experience while meeting societal needs. Service-learning involves students in service projects to apply classroom learning for local agencies that exist to effect positive change in the community.
JROTC student leadership coordinates the flag installation with the directors of the Orange County Veterans Affairs and Veterans Cemetery. Classroom time is used to instruct the students on all aspects of military service and veterans programs and the relationship to the JROTC curriculum.
