Minisink Valley was well-represented at the June 6 Orange County Executive’s Youth and Adult Awards Celebration, held at SUNY Orange, where six students and one faculty member were among the 155 people honored.
Honored were:
Youth recipients
Sharlin Barragan, for the Outstanding Leadership/Volunteerism/Citizenship Award, nominated by the Warwick Area Farmworker Organization. This award represents the contributions of individuals or groups who spend discretionary time helping others, demonstrating strong leadership skills and/or work on projects that add to the improvement of the community.
Andrew Cesarz, first place in the Grades 9-12 category, for the Healthy Living Award/Healthy Orange, nominated by the Orange County Department of Health. This award represents the positive changes young people have taken to improve the health and overall well-being of themselves or their family/school/friends.
Anthony Cuttler, certificate of honor in the Grades 9-12 category, for the Positive Change Leading to Success Award, nominated by Minisink Valley High School. This award represents a positive change that has had an impact on a youth’s overall performance.
Natalie Deoragh, for the Orange County Youth Bureau Special Appreciation Award and NYS Office of Children and Family Services – Bureau of Youth Development and Wellbeing --- Division of Youth Development and Partnerships for Success, nominated by the Orange County Youth Bureau /Youth Advisory Board.
Mijael Suazo, second place in the Grades 2-8 category, for the Positive Change Leading to Success Award, nominated by Otisville Elementary. This award represents a positive change that has had an impact on a youth’s overall performance.
Vanessa Tepper, in the Grades 9-12 category, for the Spirit of Success Award, nominated by Orange-Ulster BOCES Career and Technical Education (CTE) Program. This award represents young people who have experienced significant challenges, have demonstrated success and are positive role models for each other.
Adult recipient
Theresa Uhelsky, for the Asset Builder – Outstanding School-Based Professional Award, nominated by the Minisink Valley Athletics Department.This award represents school-based professionals whose job exemplifies dedication and commitment to students. They are role models for youth and are involved in activities that promote positive youth development beyond the classroom. Ms. Uhelsky, a 27-year physical education teacher who recently became the director of health, physical education and athletics at the Valley Central School District, was recognized for her work to inspire, encourage and mentor students who may be unsure of how to believe in themselves.
“We are so proud of our honorees,” said Superintendent Brian Monahan. “They represent what is best about our students and faculty. We know these recognitions will further inspire them to continue in their efforts.”
This was the 43rd annual celebratory event. The Orange County Executive's Youth and Adult Awards program recognizes and celebrates the achievements of both young people and adults who have made significant contributions to the community, particularly in supporting youth and families. It focuses on individuals who have overcome obstacles, demonstrated leadership, or made a positive impact through community service.
“Each of you is being honored today because of your remarkable hard work and commitment, which has shown true dedication and inspired others,” County Executive Steven Neuhaus said in a statement. “You have displayed amazing strength in the face of challenges, touched the lives of others, served as role models to your peers, and influenced positive change in our community. Your leadership, determination, and motivation are amazing and help to make Orange County a better place for people of all ages.”
