Elementary School second-graders, many who have dogs in their families, were treated to a visit by instructors from Delta K9 Training Academy in Sparrow Bush on June 17, where they were shown how well-trained dogs can serve many important roles beyond their canine roles in a home environment.
This was another welcomed opportunity where an area business shares what it does with Minisink Valley students, helping to contribute to the further development of students’ critical thinking skills and awareness of the many different roles people have in the work world while learning about engaging topics that expand beyond the classroom setting.
Owner Michael Figueroa and his team brought six dogs to meet with students and explained about the profession of dog training, how trainers shape dog behavior and how to safely approach dogs. They were also given an opportunity to meet with several of the trained dogs that Delta K9 works with.
Mr. Figueroa told them that a well-trained dog starts with a strong human-canine bond built on trust, clear communication and understanding.
Students were memorized by the well-behaved dogs and listened attentively as each trainer explained what and why her dog is trained to do what it does.
“We always love when members of our community visit, explain what they do and why that’s important,” said Principal Deborah Gallant. “These types of enrichment programs are important so our young students can see the many different roles people have in our community and how those roles can help others to make our community an even stronger and better place to live.”
