The Minisink Valley Kiwanis Club brought words to life in January, visiting the Intermediate School and Otisville Elementary to deliver dictionaries to every third-grade student.

This annual distribution is part of Kiwanis’ national “Dictionary Project.” The program's goal is to assist all students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers and resourceful learners by providing them with their own personal dictionary. The dictionaries are a gift to each student to use at school and at home for years to come. Educators see third grade as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn. As part of their visit, Kiwanis members spent time in each classroom talking to students about dictionary usage.

Dictionaries remain useful tools for success because they support clear thinking, precise communication, and lifelong learning — skills that matter in nearly every field! They build strong communication skills, expand vocabulary and confidence, support learning across subjects, encourage independence and critical thinking while even preserve language and culture.
