Junior Samiyah McKenzie has been named the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Council (ADAC) of Orange County's grand prize winner in its 39th annual Substance Use Prevention Poster Design Contest.

It's the first time a Minisink Valley student has won this grand prize honor.

This year’s theme was “Picture Your Future Through a Drug-Free Lens” and encouraged students to reflect on their goals, dreams, and the power of making healthy, drug-free choices. This year, 34 schools and organizations across 14 districts participated, showcasing creativity, insight and talent with an estimated 1,500 submissions.

Additionally, Samiyah was also named the recipient of the prestigious Lori Hulle Award, presented to the poster designer whose submission best represents Ms. Hulle’s vision of educating addiction professionals, providing mental health, alcohol and substance abuse counseling and working with schools in school-based programs.

“Through powerful essays and eye-catching posters, students shared their visions for a bright and successful future,” said Arabia Shearn, ADAC community prevention specialist, who, along with colleagues and high school and district officials, made a surprise visit to her ELA class to inform her of her selection. “Their work highlights a commitment to positive decision-making.”

Samiyah and others will be recognized on May 8 at the Orange County Emergency Services Center in Goshen, where their essays and posters will be displayed for the community to see. Additionally, Ms. Hulle’s family will be on hand to present Samiyah with her award.
