The district is pleased to announce the establishment of the Minisink Valley Middle School Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), which will officially begin in the 2026-27 school year.
Eligible seventh-grade students will soon be invited to apply for membership, which will begin during their eighth-grade year this fall.
Like the National Honor Society, this organization recognizes students who demonstrate excellence in the five pillars that define NJHS members nationwide: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Character, and Citizenship.
“The Minisink Valley chapter aims to honor students who excel both academically and personally,” said Middle School Principal Michael Larsen. “Beyond recognition, the NJHS provides a platform for leadership development and meaningful community impact. Our members will engage in service projects — such as community drives, school beautification, and partnerships with local veterans’ groups and shelters — to foster a positive school culture and grow as engaged citizens.”
Applications from eligible seventh-graders will be reviewed by an anonymous Faculty Advisory Council. Selected students for the 2026-27 School Year will be formally inducted during a special school ceremony in October 2026.
Sixth-grade students will be eligible for consideration when they become seventh-graders this fall.
Candidates are evaluated based on a holistic review of the NJHS’ Five Pillars:
Scholarship: A cumulative GPA of 90% or higher for each marking period during 7th grade, with no individual grade below 85% in any subject.
Service: Completion of at least 10 hours of approved community service within the 12 months prior to application.
Leadership & Citizenship: Active participation in at least two approved school teams, clubs, or organizations, demonstrating a strong sense of civic responsibility.
Character: Consistent evidence of honesty, integrity, and responsibility, including strict adherence to the Minisink Valley Code of Conduct.
To maintain membership in good standing, NJHS members must:
Maintain a 90% overall average (with no grade below 85%).
Attend at least 75% of all meetings.
Actively participate in chapter service projects and individual service hour requirements.
Serve as role models by upholding the highest standards of character and school spirit.
“Establishing a National Junior Honor Society chapter at our school is an exciting step for our school community,” Mr. Larsen said. “It recognizes students who excel not only academically, but also in leadership, character, service and citizenship. I know we will have many outstanding applicants, and I hope this organization inspires all current sixth-graders and future incoming students to strive for excellence, one day apply, and be accepted as National Junior Honor Society members. This organization represents the very best of what our students can achieve when they commit themselves to excellence and service.”
