Dear Minisink Valley families,
It’s with deep sadness that we share the news that one of our Middle School students passed away last evening. Our thoughts are with her family, friends, classmates, teachers and all who knew, loved and cared about her during this incredibly difficult time.
The loss of a young person affects an entire community, and we know many students and adults may experience a wide range of emotions in the days ahead. Please know we have thoughtful steps already in place to support our students and staff which include plans to provide care, counseling and opportunities for connection and support throughout this time of grief.
Today, May 13, our counseling and support staff has been available in multiple building locations, from the start of the Middle School day, for any student and faculty/staff member who would like emotional assistance and support. In the coming days, these supports, with assistance from our Orange County colleagues, will continue to be provided for students and staff.
We’re also sharing these community resources should your family wish to seek additional support:
We’re committed to supporting our students, staff, and families through this difficult period. If you have concerns about your child or would like help connecting with additional resources, please reach out to your child’s school.
This is important to stress: Giving children the opportunity to talk about their feelings in an age-appropriate way, listening carefully and observing any changes in behavior is very important as they process this loss. Please be sure to have regular conversations with your child in the coming days and be prepared to listen to them talk about things of importance to them, including what has happened.
Thank you for your compassion, support, and care for one another during this difficult time. Please keep the student’s family and friends in your thoughts.
Sincerely,
Brian C. Monahan, Superintendent
Michael Larsen, Middle School Principal
