The Minisink Valley School District has again been honored with the “Best Communities for Music Education” designation from The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation.
This is the third consecutive year the district’s Music Department has been recognized with this national distinction.
This year, Minisink Valley is one of approximately 1,000 school districts designated as being among the Best Communities in the nation for music education. The award program recognizes and celebrates outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders who have made music education part of a well-rounded education. Designations are made to districts and schools that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment and access to music education.
“Being awarded the NAMM Foundation’s Best Communities for Music Education distinction is a tremendous honor for our school district,” said music teacher Maria Fenfert. “It reflects our unwavering commitment to providing high-quality music education and recognizes the hard work of our educators, students, families and community. This award affirms that music is not just a part of our curriculum --- it’s a vital part of our culture and student success."
Superintendent Brian Monahan agreed, equally stressing how important music education is a vital part of the district’s curriculum.
“Music education fosters academic achievement by enhancing cognitive functions, strengthening memory and improving problem solving skills,” Superintendent Monahan said. “It also builds discipline, persistence, and teamwork, all of which contribute to success in school and beyond. Minisink Valley’s music program is so much more than general music education, band, chorus, drama production and building, All-County, regional or state ensembles. It’s part of the fabric which makes Minisink Valley what it is. Congratulations to our faculty, students, teachers, administrators and community members for earning this recognition.”
Research consistently demonstrates that music education in schools offers numerous benefits, impacting both academic and social-emotional development. It can improve cognitive functions, boost academic performance, enhance social-emotional skills and foster a sense of community and belonging.
Now in its 26th year, the “Best Communities for Music Education” designation is awarded to school districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.
