Students continue to learn the procedures to ensure a safe and orderly school day by visiting different areas of the school on their daily travels throughout the building. Students reviewed the rules for lunch, recess and bathroom usage and they're doing a great job understanding everything!

Settling into a new school year also means working together and using cooperative skills for a common purpose! Stephanie Giufre’s Grades 2-3-4-5 students recently launched the school year with cooperative games! They were tasked with building “King Kong Skyscrapers,” where they worked together to build a free-standing structure. This activity is a great example of physical fitness fun, teamwork and cooperation combined the STEM components of physics and engineering!

It's Peace Day at Otisville Elementary! Students are sporting tie dye attire to mark the day, although the official International Day of Peace is tomorrow, Sept. 21. This year's international theme is “Cultivating a Culture of Peace” and draws inspiration from UNESCO's foundational belief that “wars begin in the minds of men, so it is in the minds of men that the defences of peace must be constructed."

District second-graders, like Lisa Grazino’s second-graders, are learning about fairy tales as part of the initial ELA work. Fairy tales and “tall” tales are taught in order to teach story elements such as setting, characters, beginning, middle, end --- and more --- in a way that young students find relatable. As part of their reading of “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” they are taking some time for writing practice and illustrating what they’re writing!

Maria Fenfert's fifth-grade music classes are starting off the school year with a fun game of "Musical Hot Potato!" When the musical hot potato lands on a student, he/she needs to name their favorite musical artist. It's a great "getting to know you" game!

Our cutie-pie kindergarteners at Otisville Elementary and the Elementary School are learning so much in these opening weeks of school, including how to navigate the lunch line! And, they quickly became really good at doing this, too!

Thanks to the help of the Minisink Kiwanis and The Otisville Presbyterian Church, Otisville Elementary has reached its goal of collecting 1000 pounds of recyclable plastic and will be rewarded for its efforts by receiving a TREX bench for the school community via the NexTrex Community Recycling Program! The items were collected in the building from students and faculty in addition to from the Minisink Kiwanis and the Otisville Presbyterian church. Thank you to teacher aide Shannon Barbone and art teacher Kara Welsh more making many trips to Hannaford in Middletown this past summer to deliver the recycled plastic material for recycling. The school will still be recycling any plastic collected on the campus!

Thank you to Otisville Fire Department Chief Rob Coppola, who visited Jessica Kahn and Julia Ferguson’s kindergarten class yesterday, Sept. 11, to talk about the important role of first responders had on Patriot Day. Chief Coppola spoke to the class about what firefighters do. and the little students presented him with thank you cards to share with all of the Otisville firefighters. They also read Tedd Arnold’s “Fly Guy Presents Firefighters,” where they learned all about firefighters, fire trucks, and fire safety and saw how that tied into Chief Coppola’s presentation.

Who doesn't love having a story read to them? Lisa Anglemyer’s second-graders are paying close attention to her reading of Rachel Isadora’s “The Fisherman and his Wife,” a story about dissatisfaction and greed. It’s the story of the kind fisherman who catches an enchanted fish, and his greedy wife who always wants more.
