May 3 statement from Superintendent Brian Monahan

This morning, Wednesday, May 3rd, a teacher reported to MVHS administration that a student made an inappropriate comment regarding guns and gun violence during their class. High school administration immediately reported the comment to our law enforcement partners. We are providing this information this morning in the interest of transparency, and particularly given our current societal climate.

All of us have an understandable heightened awareness about this subject matter. As stated previously, once we became aware of this conversation, we immediately notified law enforcement while we spoke to the students involved. At the conclusion of our investigation, we, along with that of our law enforcement partners, determined there was no immediate threat.

Most importantly, those involved did the right thing: They heard something that they felt could be a danger and reported it to us. That’s what we want our school community to do. We ask parents to use this situation as an opportunity to remind your student about the consequences of talking about particular subject matters in a public setting.

Please remember that communication is key to working together effectively. Our partnership with you and your child is necessary to maintain safe schools for students, faculty and staff.
