The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) announced via social media today, Feb. 3, that all spring state championship events have been cancelled.

NYSPHSAA said the concerns of its 11 sections, section administrators and member schools were the impetus for its decision.

“Certainly, a difficult decision, however at this time our focus must be on maximum participation of students,” NYSPHSAA Executive Director Robert Zayas said via Twitter. “Making this announcement now provides schools and Sections with flexibility to appropriately plan and schedule the remaining seasons of the 2020-2021 school year.”

Athletic Director Tim Bult added:  “ We continue to be respectful of the NYSPHSAA’s decisions, and understand this allows NYSPHSAA to focus on planning activities which maximize student participation. At Minisink Valley, we’re continuing to follow guidance to ensure all qualified students have the ability to play their sport during the upcoming abbreviated seasons. We’re grateful for the support of our coaches, athletes and their parents and the school community as we continue our work to make this happen.”
