The High School's music program earned high marks this spring as both the band and choirs delivered impressive performances at regional music festivals, earning recognition from adjudicators and showcasing the talent, dedication and hard work of student musicians and singers.

The High School Band

The High School Band traveled to Chicopee High School in Massachusetts to participate in the Trills and Thrills Music Festival, where they performed before a panel of adjudicators and showcased their musical talents through challenging repertoire that was evaluated on technical accuracy, musicality, tone quality and artistic interpretation.

Their hard work, dedication and countless hours of preparation paid off in a big way: The band earned an incredible cumulative score of 96.

The ensemble delivered outstanding performances of “Tripwire,” “Byzantine Dances,” and “Manhattan Beach March,” demonstrating both musical excellence and professionalism on stage.

Following the festival, students celebrated their accomplishment with a fun-filled afternoon at Six Flags New England, making the trip both a rewarding musical experience and a memorable day with friends and classmates.

The High School Choirs

The high school choirs hit all the right notes at the Music in the Parks Festival in Allentown, Pa., delivering stellar performances and earning remarkable ratings plus a prestigious individual award while competing against schools from across the region.

The day began at Broughal Middle School, where all five choral ensembles — Concert Choir, Bass Ensemble, Jazz Choir, Treble Choir, and Chamber Choir — performed two selections for adjudication.

Each choral ensemble was evaluated by highly accomplished choral music educators and adjudicators in five categories: Tone quality, intonation, diction and pronunciation, note and rhythmic accuracy and musicality. Each category is worth 10 points per selection, resulting in a maximum score of 100 points across both performances. Scores are then compared with those of competing schools, and awards are presented during the festival's closing ceremony.

The choirs earned the following results:

• Concert Choir — 1st Place, Superior Rating (90.25)
• Bass Ensemble — 1st Place, Excellent Rating (86.50)
• Jazz Choir — 1st Place, Excellent Rating (88.25)
• Treble Choir — 1st Place, Superior Rating (92.75)
• Chamber Choir — 2nd Place, Superior Rating (94.50)

In addition to the ensemble awards, Gavin McGinnis received the Outstanding Vocal Soloist Award for his featured solo in “Tell My Father,” performed by the Bass Ensemble.

Following their performances, the students spent the remainder of their day at Dorney Park celebrating all of their hard work this year.

The importance of events like these.....

The band's and choirs' impressive results reflect the students’ dedication, musicianship, and countless hours of preparation, making it a memorable and successful day for both programs.

Trips like these are about much more than the final score. Performing at festivals gives students the opportunity to grow as musicians by receiving valuable feedback from experienced adjudicators, experiencing new performance environments, and challenging themselves to achieve their personal and collective best. Just as importantly, these experiences help build confidence, teamwork, responsibility and lasting friendships — skills and memories that extend far beyond the music classroom.
