Bailey Riley’s seventh-grade science students recently completed an online lab simulation in order to determine the density of certain objects seen every day. They were able to manipulate the sizes of them to see how they would change. They were also given a few "mystery" objects and had to do calculations to determine what these mystery items were based on their densities

SOUP’S ON! Victoria Ingrassia’s FACS students are now soup makers! They recently learned how to make homemade chicken noodle, broccoli cheddar, French onion and minestrone soup! Delicious! They’re perfecting important cooking skills as part of their work, including prepping, following a recipe and cleaning! What’s even nicer is the entire middle school faculty was invited to stop by for a bowl of soup! A wonderful act of kindness!

Victoria Ingrassia’s eighth-grade FACS students have made delicious Focaccia bread, a type of flat Italian bread made with yeast and olive oil and flavored with herbs. Focaccia is one-half to one-inch thick with a light crust on the top and bottom. It's often described as "flatbread" or "Italian flat bread," but unlike the flat bread, it’s not isn't flat at all, but thick and fluffy. Even more fun: Students took their recently learning kitchen cutting skills to cut up raw vegetables to create one-of-a-kind vegetable artwork on their breads! Take a look at their amazing creativity!

District sixth-graders were treated to a special assembly which ties into the work they’re doing in their science classes: Seeing how science is all around us as they continue to investigate, experiment with and observe how our universe works. Pathology Manager Lisa Everle spoke to students on Sept. 25 about the field of clinical pathology and how a clinical pathology laboratory works! A clinical pathology laboratory performs tests on bodily fluids, tissues and cells to help diagnose and/or monitor diseases. Laboratory specialty areas can include: Blood bank, clinical chemistry and biology, toxicology, hematology, immunology and serology and microbiology.

Rich Budd’s sixth-grade technology students are constructing models rockets….which they will launch once complete! Each student received a kit which explains what they need to do, with Mr. Budd demonstrating each step along the way. Students are just about at a point where it’s time to paint their rockets. There will be two launch blast-off days coming up soon!

The seventh-grade science team of Jen Zaro, Bailey Riley, Paul John DeStefano and Rebecca Foster-Faith led their students in a recent “Color Changing Volume” lab where students were tasked with following a series of instructions to make precise measurements. When the measurements leading to chemical reactions to create color changes are done correctly, the result was students created rainbows via their test tubes of color! Students have been practicing measuring mass, length, volume and using measurements of mass and volume to calculate density. Students are getting hands on experiences with triple beam balances, graduates cylinders, metric rulers, digital temperature probes and electric balances.

Nicole Lee’s sixth-grade science students have quickly jumped into the world of science! In their recent density layers lab, students compared different substances density and made our own density jars! Plus, students also participated in some “getting to know you” activities via a Science Motivates board, where students picked a word and placed it on a paper heart with their name. Their selected word is intended to motivate them to do well in school this upcoming year. Their Skittles activity invited students to pick one candy color which represents a fact about them, such as the color orange (which could be someone’s favorite food or color). They used jumbo-sized Post-it notes and put their name on any of the character categories that reflects them.

Kristine Ostensen’s eighth-grade science students had some sweet fun in their recent triple beam balance lab using candy! Students needed to find the mass of each individual candy using the triple beam balance (TBB). They added up their masses and compared it to the total measured mass of all the candy. When their work was done, what else could they do but eat the candy?
