High School physics teacher Martin Greco was recently honored by the Mid-Hudson School Study Council for his work to support the academic achievements and successes of his students by being named a recipient of its 2023 Award for Teacher Excellence.

Each year, the Newburgh-based organization honors those in the education field who display excellence in their work.

“As principal, I have hired many science teachers, during my 30 plus year career at Minisink Valley,” said Principal Kenneth Hauck. “Without a doubt, Marty is the fabric of the Minisink Valley Science Department. More than that, he’s the glue that holds this department together and simply the best Physics teacher I’ve ever hired. This is important because our students connect with him on a level I’ve not seen before with my faculty. Marty is funny and engaging and he knows how to craft instructional messages that resonate with students.”

Mr. Hauck added: “Marty is a true ‘Physics Intellect.’ He lives and breathes the subject of Physics in a way I’ve not seen in others. Physics is a tough topic and not for the meek. Because of Marty’s ability to present the material to students in a way that’s relatable, students realize they can successfully embrace challenging material. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of our students take a ‘leap of faith’ when enrolling in Marty Greco’s Physics classes. Assuming that’s true, it’s because they know that Marty will do whatever he can to make certain they understand his rigorous coursework understandable. That’s what the best teachers do, and Marty is one of them.”

Board of Education President Joseph Flaherty stressed Mr. Greco knows the importance of secondary education in a child’s future and the role that a dedicated and properly trained teacher plays in providing that child with that education.

“In the 28 years he’s taught at Minisink, he’s earned the respect of his colleagues but most importantly, he’s earned the admiration of his students by instilling the importance of  the necessary role science plays in our lives,” he added. “Most importantly, Mr. Greco  leads by example.  His work ethic is second to none and his first, and most important, priority is always to make sure his students’ emotional, social and academic needs are being met.”
