2ND GRADERS LEARN A TIMELESS SKILL, STITCH BY STICH

With the help of a few moms and grandmas, Mrs. O’Connor’s second graders took their careful time to learn a few basics of hand sewing, on Friday, Dec. 15.

Gently weaving needle and thread, stitch by stitch, each student created a beautiful holiday stocking to present to his/her family as a gift.

Some found it a difficult skill and couldn't imagine the days when clothes were hand-sewn, and families made their own. But everyone was able to complete their sewing project and felt proud of learning a new skill that might yet come in handy.

This activity aligns with the concept of maker education that is behind the growing makerspace movement. Broadly speaking, the goal is to encourage learners to create by interacting with physical objects, and to balance our culture of technology consumption with one of hands-on innovation, experimentation, and construction.
