Jonathon ClemmonsMeet Jonathan Clemmons, Middle School technology teacher!

What’s your favorite aspect of your job?

As a technology teacher, I can honestly say that student engagement is very close to 100 percent!  Students bring an enthusiasm to class, the likes of which I never saw in my previous roles as a math and science teacher!

I can give minimal instruction and watch in amazement at students’ creative ways to solve problems as they work on their chosen projects. Often, I “sneak-in” comments pointing out connections between a student’s project work and topics taught in other disciplines.  An acknowledging nod or smile is…priceless!

Why do you believe in and support the work of the Minisink Valley School District and what it does for the community?

When I was first hired as a teacher at Minisink Valley, a Board of Education member asked me, “When you were a student here at Minisink Valley, did you realize how beautiful this campus is?”

I responded: “Yes. But, only after I made the freshman basketball team and traveled to other schools for away games.”

I am a Minisink Valley graduate. My three children are Minisink Valley graduates. I also had family members graduate from one-room schools that were commonplace to this area prior to the Minisink Valley School District’s formation.

My roots in this community are deep. I have enormous pride in our school, our community and can’t imagine living or teaching anywhere else.

How has this pandemic refocused the work you do every day?

Most of my projects are hands-on and require the use of tools or specialized equipment. As our current learning environment has forced us to rely heavily on technology, I believe that it is important to maintain as many hands-on projects, especially for my remote students. There is great personal satisfaction that comes from creating something with one’s own hands.

What do you want to say directly to the community about the importance of your work?

I yearn for the return to a normal school week!  But until then, I will continue to refine my projects to maximize student learning and build rapport to strengthen students’ social emotional well-being!  Thank you for your continued support!
