After almost four decades of providing custodial services to the Minisink Valley School District, Otisville Elementary School Custodian John Holmberg retired on Sept. 12,  with school staff hosting a farewell reception for him.

Staff sang “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” as Mr. Holmberg entered Otisville’s faculty dining lounge. He seemed genuinely surprised at seeing the retirement cake waiting for him to cut. He teared up slightly as he thanked everyone for their good wishes.

“I’ve made a lot of good friends here,” Mr. Holmberg said, noting he’s worked at other district buildings throughout his Minisink tenure. “I mean this from the bottom of my heart: This is ‘my home’ for all these school years. You’ve always opened your arms to me. I will miss every one of you. I’ve retired (from the district) from the building I wanted to retire from.”

Otisville Principal Vincent Biele said he hoped Holmberg would have a “sweet retirement” as he handed him a piece of cake.

“He says  this is ‘his home,’” Mr. Biele said. “But really, ‘his home’ found him. You can’t find a nicer guy.”

Turning to Mr. Holmberg, he added: “You’re always a part of this building and our district. When someone retires, a part of the building goes with them. A part of this building is going with you, John. Enjoy your retirement.”
