During the 2015-2016 academic year, 21 of 23 Minisink Valley High School varsity teams were recognized as state scholar-athlete teams, balancing their hard work commitment to their sport with a high level of academic achievement.  Among those recognized were the girls track and field team, which had the highest composite GPA of all awarded Minisink teams with 96.2.

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA), the governing body for interscholastic athletics in New York state, recognizes academic achievement through its Scholar Athlete Team Award Program. Varsity teams must have a cumulative GPA of 90 or above to earn the NYSPHSAA recognition.

At the June 16 Board of Education meeting, Tim Bult, director of the high school athletics department, presented on this year’s NYSPHSAA Team-Scholar recipients (click here for slide presentation). The girls track and field team was invited to represent the collective academic and athletic excellence of Minisink’s high school teams. Kara Anderson-Winchell, girls track head coach, introduced the team members to the Board and the audience. Joseph Flaherty, Board president, presented each student-athlete with a certificate of recognition.

“This is a remarkable accomplishment for our student athletes and our high school. Reaching this level of academic and athletic achievement demands consistent focus, discipline and a brand of commitment that is not without hard choices and sacrifice,” Tim Bult said. “These awards are also a testimony to the talent and leadership of our faculty and coaches.”

Congratulations to All!
