Seven students in grades 4-5 qualified for the 2016 Odyssey of the Mind program at Otisville elementary and worked every day after school for the last four months to enter the regional competition on Saturday, March 12, in Goshen.

All participating teams were judged in three areas. In the long-term problem category, the OES team chose “Furs, Fins Feathers and Friends” which called for a humorous performance depicting problem-solving from the perspective of three animals. The animals had to help a stranger, help each other, and solve a problem that threatened the survival of all animals. The three animals were expected to sing, dance, and show emotions. Teams were also judge on style and on quick-thinking with a spontaneous problem to be resolved in-the-moment.

Over the course of their problem-solving journey, Odyssey of the Mind members learned valuable lessons in teamwork and used creative and critical thinking to solve problems. Together they wrote a script and a song, choreographed a dance, and designed costumes, props and scenery for their play. They each found new, individual strengths and learned to use them for the benefit of the whole.

Some team members found it especially challenging to learn to dance and sing; others were anxious about performing on stage in front of a large audience. But the bonds of friendship they formed along the way and their determination to succeed together elevated their confidence and delivered an audacious performance.

“Now that the competition is over, the students all say that they will miss coming to practice after school and meeting during their lunch to discuss ideas.  They worked hard and they should all be very proud of themselves,” said David Gronner, special education teacher and Odyssey of the Mind coach.

Participating OES students were Alessio Bruni, who played a Jaguar; Kaitlyn Kurpick, in the role of Angel Fish; Isabella Rivera and Aidan Ward, both Explorers; Ethan Serbetzian, the Lumberjack; Sophia Skinner, the Scarlett Macaw; and Maxwell Watson, the Doorkeeper.

Congratulations to all!
