SECOND GRADE STUDENTS CREATE A FANTASTIC WORLD OF COURTESY, COCOA AND COOL NEW ANIMALS

In Mrs. Ferrara’s 2nd grade class, COCOA is much more than a favorite hot drink; it’s a handy acronym for Caring, Orderly, Checking, Orate, and Admirable. These 2nd graders practice these values and skills every day, at school and at home. Their good efforts recently earned them the privilege of a Hot Cocoa Party – of the chocolate variety.

What is a party without guests? Mrs. Ferrara’s students invited their 5th grade reading buddies in Mrs. Walker's class to this celebration, which also featured a whole new world of animal species as the culmination of a unit on different animal groups, habitats and diets. Working with their new knowledge, the 2nd graders created and illustrated fantastic animal hybrids, which were laminated for the presentation to the visiting 5th grade class.

The “Rainforest Song” served as the musical background for the introduction of never-before-seen creatures such as the “leager,” a lion-tiger hybrid; the “hark,” a horse-shark that is capable of galloping under water; the “dolf,” a dog-wolf that needs “hot pockets to live,” according to his genetic engineer. Each child wrote a paragraph about their animal hybrid’s special characteristics and shared it with the audience.
