District’s 2022-23 Parent Education Advocacy Training Series (PEATS) begins on Tuesday, Oct. 4

Parent Education Advocacy Training Series Minisink Valley’s Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) Department will offer the first of its 2022-23 Parent Education Advocacy Training Series (PEATS) workshops on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. at Minisink Valley High School.

This programming is part of PPS’ commitment to provide the best possible and successful education experience for students which maximizes each student’s academic achievement and accomplishments.

“We follow a comprehensive team approach to develop and implement a personalized education plan for each child,” said Patricia Irwin, special education supervisor. “Parents are a very important part of that team. Part of our mission is to ensure parents also have all the necessary information to help them best navigate their child’s educational journey as we all continue to work together.”

In partnership with Independent Living, Inc. an informative year-long series of workshops to help parents be more knowledgeable about a variety of special education topics has been developed.

The first workshop is called “OPWDD — Office of People with Developmental Disabilities.”  This workshop provides an overview of the eligibility criteria and benefits for children through OPWDD.

OPWDD participates in planning, development and coordination of services to support people of all ages with developmental disabilities and their families.  It also provides advocacy, mediation, outreach, education and training for individuals with developmental disabilities, families, providers, educators and the Orange County community.

“OPWDD is an extremely useful and helpful resource and we invite you to learn more about how this office may be able to help you and your family,” added Ms. Irwin.

Each month, at 6 p.m. at the high school, other topics will be presented. Minisink Valley PPS staff will also be in attendance. The workshop series will conclude in June 2023.

So that useful materials are on hand for everyone, Independent Living, Inc. requests that you  RSVP your attendance to: Lisa Cohen at    lcohen@myindependentliving.org.    If you have any questions, please call 845-415-2511.
